@Rebecca - I give a big YES for combining how-tos with what-ifs. Sharing that online is one of the big bonuses of our wired time, IMHO. :-)

@Jamie - Good call. The FF Web Developer Extension is the primary tool that helped me make the shift from plodding through the wonders of CSS to really enjoying seeing it in action.

Incredibly thorough!

For tuning the css I'd also recommend Chris Pederick's Web Developer Extension for Firefox as well as Firebug. Both are lifesavers when putting together any new site design.

This is wonderful. Give us a <b>system</b> and we can do anything within the physical and mental capabilities that nature has given, or so it always feels. When someone like you takes the trouble to step through and document a process like this, you're not just teaching a new skill but empowering others with the confidence to test and stretch their native abilities. It's about much more than a WordPress theme, really. But the roadmap to building a new theme is appreciated, too!

Thanks, Stephan.

Wishing I was that systematic is part of why I decided to commit to blogging my way through a step-by-step theme remodel. In the process of making a step into a blog post I have to re-examine what I am doing: consider what I want from each step, justify my actions, and document my process. Now that I've written about this particular step and backed up my work, I'll never have to re-do it from scratch. Next step, same thing.

Blogging is also very nice from a semi-social point of view. The second you left your comment I went from sitting alone at my desk, re-checking this post, to mentally underlining that word "systematic," and nodding back at you. :)

Nice post. I wish I was that systematic about creating my first Wordpress theme. But I have it bookmarked for next time, if I ever decide to tackle that again.
